Hailed as one of Singapore’s most versatile musicians, Han Oh has attained top accolades from performing with acclaimed international artists from most musical genres. He was invited to perform alongside a wide spectrum of top artists ranging from the classical T’ang Quartet to iconic pop-rock legends such as Jay-Z, Linkin Park, David Foster and Paul McCartney amongst many others. He has collaborated and recorded sessions for Grammy-winning producers such as David Foster, Patrick Leonard, Bill Bottrell, Clint Mansell and “Dangermouse” aka Brian Burton.

As recipient of a Singapore Youth Orchestra Scholarship, Han studied under Lionel Tan of the acclaimed T’ang Quartet before attending the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. His principal teachers also include George Taylor of the Eastman School of Music and Eugene Becker of the Julliard School. Han has also participated in masterclasses with John Graham, Eugene Young, James Dunham, Roberto Diaz, Paul Katz, Judith Glyde, Erika Eckert and the Takacs Quartet.

At the age of nineteen, Han was the sole prizewinner in the 1993 National Singapore Music Competition-Open Lower Strings Category. He was consequently awarded the Certificate of Distinction from the Singapore National Arts Council in that same year. Han also represented Singapore at the Asian Youth Orchestra and the Australian National Music Camp.

Classically, Han served as principal violist for numerous orchestras including the

Colorado Mahler Festival Orchestra, Asian American Philharmonic Orchestra, the San Francisco Golden Gate Opera Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra as well as The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and has led its viola section for numerous productions. He was also invited to perform as a full-time member of T’ang Quartet from 2009 to 2011 and was featured as a soloist, alongside the quartet, at the Singapore premiere of Benjamin Lees’ “Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra” with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2010. During his tenure with the quartet, Han has performed in numerous concerts at prestigious international music festivals in the USA, Singapore, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Macau, Malaysia and Indonesia among many others.

 

Proudly Singaporean, Han made his mark as the first musician from his home country to have performed alongside leading artistes in top international festivals and awards such as the Grammy Awards, Coachella Valley Music Festival and Lollapalooza. He was also the only Singaporean to have performed with the American Idol Band and has toured with the multi-platinum Grammy- winning band, Gnarls Barkley.

Han has also performed live alongside top industry legends such as Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan, Linkin Park, Jay Z, Sir Paul McCartney, Michael Buble, Chris Daughtry, Cee-lo Green, KD Lang, Jewel, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton John, Clay Aiken, Jamie Cullum, Barry Manilow, Paul Anka, Reba McEntire, David Foster, Fish Leong and Joanna Dong.

 

As an original member of the platinum-selling Gnarls Barkley band, Han has toured with the group extensively within the United States of America and Canada. He has performed to sold-out crowds at major venues including the 2006 Coachella Valley Music Festival (California), Lollapalooza 2006 (Chicago), The Roxy (Los Angeles), The Fillmore (San Francisco), The House of Blues (Chicago, Atlantic City), KoolHaus (Toronto), State Theater (Detroit), 1st Avenue (Minneapolis), Webster Hall (New York), Central Park SummerStage (New York) and the Avalon (Los Angeles, Boston). Han was also involved in the creative side of the project, contributing arrangements for the live music versions for Gnarls Barkley’s debut album “St. Elsewhere”, including the hit single “Crazy”. The band received four nominations for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards that was held at the Staples Center, Los Angeles in 2007 for the following categories: “Record of The Year”, “Album of The Year”, “Best Alternative Music Album” and “Best Urban/Alternative Performance”. The band consequently won two Grammy Awards for “Best Alternative Music Album” and “Best Urban/Alternative Performance”. The band was also awarded “Best Song” and the “Future Sounds” at MTV’sEuropean Music Awards 2006 in Copenhagen. Additionally, the band won the award for “Best Group” at the 2007 BET Awards.

Han had multiple appearances on late night talk shows hosted by Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Han also appeared on the 2006 Season Finale of the hit CBS sitcom “ How I Met Your Mother” as well as a performance at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards in Sony Studios, Los Angeles. At “Celebrity Fight Night 2006”, Han toured and performed alongside with David Foster at the charity event for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

Upon his return to Singapore in 2007, Han has been actively involved in the local performing arts scene, contributing his expertise to numerous musical arts groups of different genres.

​

A highly sought-after musician in the local and international theater music industry, Han has performed in many musical theater productions such as “December Rains”, “Into the Woods”, “Spring Awakening”, “La Cage aux Folles 2012”, “National Broadway Company”, “Glass Anatomy”, “Crazy Christmas 2012”, “Company”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Next to Normal”, “La Cage aux Folles 2017”, “RENT”, “The Great Wall” and “The Addams Family”.

Han has recorded numerous sessions at major Hollywood studios including The Newman Scoring Stage (20th Century FOX), Paramount Scoring Stage(Paramount Studios), Eastwood Scoring Stage (Warner Brothers Studios), Sony Studios, Westlake Studios and Centerstage Studios.

 

Han has also recorded for numerous artistes and major events since his return to Singapore, including the filmmaker Eric Khoo, the Sam Willows as well as National Day Parade 2013 and 2019.

​

In recognition of his talents and expertise on the electric strings genre, Han was officially appointed in August 2014 as the first YAMAHA Electric Strings Artist from Singapore, joining the ranks of highly acclaimed fellow YAMAHA Artists worldwide such as David Foster, Josh Groban, Elton John and the 2Cellos.

 

Han performs exclusively on his YAMAHA YEV105BL (5-String Violin/Viola Hybrid) when performing on the Electric violin platform, which he fondly refers to as his YAMAHA “QUINTON”. He has recently released an album of original music titled “Eviolonogue”, which was produced and recorded solely on the electric 5-String platform. He is immensely honored and grateful for the recognition and support from YAMAHA MUSIC in his creative endeavors to spearhead the electric strings movement in Singapore.
